Galveston

Yes, Joe and I both know that we have had one heck of a summer vacation already, but when the opportunity arises to go lounge on a beach before being thrown back into the real world of work and school, how could we have declined???

Saturday afternoon, after relaxing at the beach, Mimi took us on an adventure. She read in her guideposts about how Hurricane Ike had affected the trees in Galveston, and how several people donated money to have the dead trees carved into life-like creations. It really was neat to see all the different tree carvings, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the historic part of Galveston. The old houses were absolutely beautiful!

These are some of my favorite carvings:

Joe also got to eat at "Joe's Crab Shack" for the first time....

On Sunday, it rained during our regular beach time, so we all just relaxed until the sun came back out. We spent some more time laying out on the beach and enjoying the waves that afternoon. After we had taken showers and gotten cleaned up, we went to eat some yummy Mexican food.

My mother is turning 40 at the end of this month, so she is "celebrating her thirties" until the 29th of August. This means that we have to do something celebratory every day. I wish that I could write into words how funny she is....but its not possible. Here are a few examples:

Mom chased the mariachi band through the restaurant to get this picture with them. I was so embarrassed.

After a woman had just scolded her children for climbing on the horses, mom got on and asked me to take her picture.....

She also told me to take her picture by this short palm tree so that when people saw it, they would think she was tall.....are you fooled???

After I made a "J+S" heart in the sand, she made this one...all funniness aside, isn't my mother absolutely gorgeous! I am so lucky to call her mine...she is beautiful both inside and out!

I'm also lucky to have this lady in my life! Isn't she HOT for a 71 year old?!?!? She even rocked a bikini on our last day at the beach. She is definitely getting more beautiful with age!

Our last day at the beach was the most adventurous. Every day when Joe and I would get too hot on the shore, we would walk out to shoulder high water and jump with the waves; it was very relaxing! We had been out in the water for close to an hour when we decided to head back in. When we turned around to face my mom, she was flailing her arms trying to get our attention. You can't hear a thing over the waves, so we didn't realize until we had gotten back to the shore that she had seen a shark! I would have thought that she was crazy, but when we turned around, both Joe and I saw it too...more than once! Mom said that it was right in front of us while we were in the water, but neither one of us had seen it at that point! Since I was on the shore at that point, it really didn't freak me out at all, but looking back now, its hard to imagine the "what ifs"....

Now that our summer has come to an end, I look back and find it so hard to believe that I married the love of my life TWO months ago! It seems that our summer just flew right by us! Joe and I both started work today and it feels both good and bad to be back on a schedule. I am so grateful the unforgettable summer that we had, but I can't help but look forward to what the rest of this year is going to hold for us.
